The NECCOG Animal Services Program is a service of the Northeastern
Connecticut Council of Governments.  The program began in August 2004.  The
program currently serves Brooklyn, Canterbury, Hampton, Killingly, Pomfret,
Sterling, Voluntown and Woodstock.
Our program is available 24/7/365.  There is always an Animal Control Officer (ACO) on duty.  Calls during regular business hours are taken by the NECCOG switchboard and then processed to provide a timely response.  Calls taken after hours and on weekends are taken by our answering service.  Based on the nature of the call the ACO may be called immediately (animal hit by car) or it may be held for action (barking dog) during regular business hours.
Our staffing includes a full-time animal control officer who also serves as the program director (this person has more than 25 years in animal control), two part-time ACO's, and secretarial/ administrative staff through NECCOG.  We also utilize a number of volunteers  to assist in the cleaning of kennels and exercising animals house in our Killingly facility.  We have 20 runs to house dogs and a limited number of cages to house cats.  Other domestic animals (horses, cows, pigs, etc....) are dealt with on a case by case basis in coordination with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.
Each animal eligible for adoption is fully evaluated by our staff and we seek the best match possible.  Since 2004, NECCOG has placed more than 3,200 animals and we have not had to put any animal dog due to lack of space (with the exception of diseased or temperament issues) that can be placed with an appropriate owner are so placed.
While our program is paid by the participating towns, we are always in need of donations (cash or items) to cover expenses such as veterinary bills, food and other items to make our animals more comfortable.  Persons wanting to donate can do so directly with NECCOG.  We are also always in need of volunteers with a passion for animals and welcome their participation - please contact NECCOG, if you are interested.
