South Brook and South Bigelow Roads- Mulch Sealing Project

July 1st, 2014 General News
Dear Friends and Fellow Residents:
This year, as part of our road maintenance program, the town will complete an "oil sealing" of South Brook Rd and South Bigelow Rd to preserve the asphalt. Work is scheduled to be completed between July 11th ad July 31st.  Please note that this time of work is weather dependant and if the forecast calls for rain, operations will be delayed.  Once work begins in your area, this process will only take a few hours and then the road will be fully opened to traffic.
This type of application acts as a rejuvenator for the bitumous asphalt pavement.  The sealing material is sprayed on, one lane at a time, and then is covered for a short period of time.  The amount of cover material used varies depending on conditions.  This material may remain in place in order to work with this sealant.  After a few days, the remaining cover will be swept up.
Although very limited traffic can be accommodated in the work zone, motorists should avoid this area if possible.  It is essential that NO CARS be parked in the street while this work is being performed.
You can exit your driveway and drive through the work area, but PLEASE PROCEED SLOWLY and stay on the covered areas as the liquid material can be slippery and get onto cars.  All moving traffic is STRICTLY limited to five (5) miles per hour when traveling on any treated areas in the work zone.  Please be advised that driving onto a driveway will cause the driveway to become temporarily stained.  This material can be washed off with hot soapy water or a bug and tar remover, the earlier the better.
This product is environmentally safe, restores the properties of oxidized asphalt, protects the street surface, temporarily provides a renewed dark color and extends the pavement life expectancy.  Please bear with us through any inconveniences as this method will minimize the need for more costly types of street repair in the future.
I thank you for your patience as this maintenance project goes forward.  If you have any questions or concerns about the project, please don't hesitate to call me at the Town Hall at 860.455.9132 x2 or stop by.

Many thanks,
Allan Cahill
